Trend Talk:The Slip Dress

The slip dress trend has certainly made an re-entry into the fashion world proving to be one of the most popular trends this year. It’s versatile and certainly flies the flag in the comfort stakes but it’s shapeless nature can be off putting for some. Today I’ve picked two contrasting slip dress styles that are extremely versatile and will work as a stand out ensembles your wardrobe. Both looks are from international retailers to ensure these trends are accessible for all readers and of course sizes.

Look One:

This first look is more of a statement slip dress style in itself. This particular one is from Tess Holliday’s collabouration with plus size Canadian brand Penningtons which ranges from sizes 14-32. What I loved about it was how Tess created more of a dip hem style at the back while to the front you’ll find it has cross over detailing making this most definitely a slip dress with a twist and giving more structure to your frame. As this dress has thicker straps than typical slip dress styles, it also enables fuller busts to wear a variety of bra’s with this too.

For styling this look you can instantly create a Glam Goth vibe and dress it up or down as you please. Today I paired it with a leather jacket I had in my wardrobe, there is also a collarless version from Tess’s collection which you can find here.  For during the day you could look to biker boots and a simple white cotton t-shirt underneath for true 90’s inspiration.

Look 2:

This dress is for those who prefer shorter styles, this particular one I happened to come across recently in River Island. Berry shades are a real Autumn/ Winter favourite and works really well for those who would have a lot of black accessories in your wardrobe already. For those living in cooler climates like I do, a thin funnel neck or polo neck style top works really well with this kind of slip dress. Avoid any tops with thick or with heavy pleating as it means your slip dress with gather or look bulky in the wrong areas. Adding something fitted under the dress also works as a great balance to your outfit too.  For an evening out todays look would work really well or to dress it down add black tights and edgy boots for a pretty day time look.
