Time To Start Embracing “Off” Mode

This post is in collaboration with Nike.

“And every day, the world will drag you by the hand, yelling, “This is important! And this is important! And this is important! You need to worry about this! And this! And this!” And each day, it’s up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say, “No. This is what’s important.”
― Iain Thomas

There are times in life where a lot of us feel completely and utterly overwhelmed. Sometimes it can just feel like your brain is clouded and you can’t think straight, other times it can be anxiety over the smallest of things. As part of my job for modelling there are lots early call times, very long days and lots of airports. Travel and the busy footprints of big cities is where I have to be for work mainly. Reflecting on the past two years brings me to the same answer – I never really took enough time out and this year I really started to feel it. I know alot of people will identify with this especially if you are self employed because regardless of what line of work you are in – you’re constantly “on” – thinking about what needs to be done next, praying that you haven’t forgotten something really important you had to do that day or working on the emails that need to be answered when realistically they can probably wait until the next morning and not 1 or 2 am!

My destresser is the gym, boxercise or yoga but I find yoga to be my easier go-to because it’s a mini escape that can be done anywhere be it in your room with peace and quiet ( even for just ten minutes!), a hotel room if you travel a lot for work, or like I did today, escaped to the beach. This this is where I grew up, it’s a small town called Malahide in Co.Dublin in Ireland. I don’t think I ever appreciated it enough growing up and now any chance I can get to come here, to stare at the waves and try where possible to think about nothing, I take it and just breath. This is why when Nike got in touch with me to speak about their Nike+ Training Club App for yoga, I was both honored as a brand I’ve known my entire life to ask a curvy girl but also to talk about a topic like yoga thats played a vital part in keeping me going these past few months.

The app is essentially the busy person’s guide to yoga and I know for me my phone might as well be an extension to my arm so it was ideal! Once you download the app ( totally free by the way) you simply add your login details and you can tailor your interests and levels e.g  beginner – advanced etc. When you click yoga you are given various list options all with different time frames so it’s very easy to tailor make your own yoga workout on what works for you at that given moment. You’ll also get an overview with imagery examples of the workout/ poses that would be done throughout which I found made it easier to pick and choose how complicated I wanted the workout to be. I literally just put my headphones in and pressed play – once the workout begins you are talked through everything and can’t help but feel like you are immediately transported away from the madness of everyday life and into your own indestructible space for just a little while.
