Trend Tackler: The Leatherette Pencil Skirt

Pencil skirts were on the catwalk hot list for Spring Summer 2018 bringing back the 50’s favourite staple in every texture, print and cut imaginable. Leatherette and paper bag styles made a huge appearance in particular for designers which is why I picked it as my trend tackler today.  Leatherette styles teamed with a pencil cut can be a trickier one of the trends to work for any one to I thought I’d embrace this today in a formal and casual style.

Both Prada and Max Mara embraced the belted pencil skirt this year. Todays skirt is from River Island which has a that “paper bag” effect around the waistline. In trouser styles which featured the paper bag waistline, I wasn’t a huge fan, but in a pencil skirt I was surprisingly converted. I guess for me it was the overall practicality of it knowing that any top you pair this with would be kept in place for the day. For look one, I went for more of an after work look which Balenciaga, No.21 and Erdem favoured in their pencil skirt choices for their fashion week shows. Any shirt and colour would work  with this skirt; today I opted for a light wash shirt from Next which has an ever so slight denim effect to it. For a more glam effect look to a figure hugging bodies, frill tops or halter neck styles.

Look two : casual cool

This for me would probably be more for when the weather gets warmer, but a perfect city style or “weekend vibes” look. Anything where I can throw on my trainers is a good look for me and this is a simply but comfort look instantly. The other perks to pencil skirt styles with belts means you can define your waistline as much as you please. For our colder weather don’t be afraid to play with layers and texture with an oversized jumper or a cropped biker jacket in a bold colour such a reds, blues and greens. I’ve added a longer list at the bottom of this post with options for tall and petite pencil skirt finds. Lou xx
